Know What You Are Cleaning: The Clear Coat, Not the Carbon

When you clean a carbon fiber product, you are cleaning the resin and clear-coat layer that sits on top of the woven fibers — not the carbon itself. Carbon fibers are essentially indestructible at room temperature. The resin (epoxy) and the protective topcoat (UV-cure urethane or polyurethane) are what scratch, haze, or yellow if abused [1].

  1. 1. Wipe with a microfiber cloth
    Dry, lint-free, no paper towels (paper fibers are abrasive at the micro level).
  2. 2. Buff in straight strokes
    Wipe along the weave direction, not in circles. Circular motion creates spider-web micro-scratches under bright light.
  3. 3. Inspect under angled light
    Hold under a lamp at ~30°. Anything that looks like a film is dust or oils — do another pass with a slightly damp cloth.

Deep Cleaning (Every Few Months or After a Spill)

  1. 1. Damp microfiber + drop of mild soap
    pH-neutral hand soap, diluted 1:50 in distilled water. Wring the cloth so it is damp, not wet.
  2. 2. Wipe the surface in straight passes
    No scrubbing. Soap lifts oils; pressure does not improve the result, only adds risk.
  3. 3. Rinse with a second damp cloth
    Plain distilled water removes soap residue.

  • When not in daily use, store inside the supplied dust bag or any soft microfiber pouch — keeps surface dust off and prevents pocket-on-pocket scratches.
  • For long-term storage (over 1 year), a silica-gel desiccant in the storage box prevents moisture absorption at the resin edges.
  • Travelling internationally? Keep the wallet in your carry-on. Cargo holds can drop below freezing; while carbon fiber itself does not care, the leather card slots and any adhesive interfaces hate thermal cycling.
  • Avoid storing tightly stacked under heavy objects. Carbon fiber is stiff but the surrounding clear coat can develop press marks if loaded for months.

How Long Should a Carbon Fiber Wallet Last?

With normal pocket use and the routine above, expect a 10+ year service life with no visible degradation. The pattern of the 3K twill weave actually develops a slightly deeper, warmer tone over the first 2–3 years as the topcoat fully cures and any micro-haze polishes itself out from daily handling. Can I clean my carbon fiber wallet with alcohol-based hand sanitizer?

No. Most hand sanitizers contain glycerin and high-percentage alcohols that leave streaks and slowly soften the protective topcoat. Use a damp microfiber cloth with a drop of pH-neutral soap instead.

Why does my wallet have tiny "spider-web" scratches under bright light?

Almost always from circular polishing — paper towels, a tissue, or a dry rag wiped in circles. Switch to straight passes along the weave direction with a clean microfiber cloth and they will visually fade over time as the topcoat self-levels with handling.

Is carbon fiber waterproof? Can I rinse my wallet under a tap?

The carbon fiber and resin themselves are waterproof. A quick rinse will not hurt the material, but standing water can wick into the seam between the carbon panel and any leather/elastic insert and cause delamination over time. Wipe dry immediately if it gets wet.

Will the clear coat yellow over time?

Can I machine-wash a carbon fiber card holder?

No. Even on a delicate cycle, the agitation chips the topcoat at the corners and the detergent attacks the resin. Hand-clean only.

How do I remove ink (e.g., from a leaky pen) from the surface?

A single quick wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber cloth will lift fresh ink. Dried ink may need a second pass. Do this within minutes — once ink soaks into a microscopic scratch in the topcoat, it is permanent.
