How does the OEM/ODM process work at MASTERMATE?+

Six steps: (1) Send a brief + reference files; (2) Receive engineering quote in 24 hours; (3) Approve quote and pay tooling deposit (if needed); (4) Receive first-article sample in 10-20 days; (5) Approve sample and place production order; (6) Production in 15-30 days, then shipment. A dedicated project engineer (not a sales rep) handles every step.

What files and information do you need to start a custom project?+

Ideally: 3D CAD (.STEP, .STP, .SLDPRT, .X_T), or 2D drawings (.PDF, .DXF) with dimensions and tolerances. We also accept hand sketches with target sizes, reference photos, or even just "I want this with carbon fiber instead of plastic" — our team can reverse-engineer from physical samples.

Do you sign NDAs and protect my designs?+

Yes. We sign mutual NDAs on request before any file exchange. All client files are stored on access-controlled servers and destroyed after project completion if requested. Mould tooling is stored under client name and never used for other customers. We can also assign IP rights in writing on customer-funded tooling.

How long does tooling and first article take?+

Soft tooling (vacuum-bag layup over PU): 15-25 days. Hard tooling (aluminum mould): 35-60 days. CNC fixtures for plate-cut parts: 5-10 days. First-article sample is included in tooling cost. Helmet shell tooling with FEA + certification: 60-90 days. Tooling costs $300-$45,000 depending on complexity.

What is the minimum order for custom-tooled products?+

For most categories, custom tooling makes sense at MOQ 50-100 pcs. Below 50 pcs we recommend modifying an existing stock product or using soft tooling (lower MOQ but slightly higher per-piece cost). Above 1,000 pcs, the per-piece tooling amortization becomes negligible.

Can you reverse-engineer a part from a physical sample?+

Yes. Ship us a sample and we 3D-scan it ($150-$400), produce CAD, send you the file for approval, then mould a first article in 20-25 days. Useful for replacing OEM parts on cars/bikes/drones where original CAD is unavailable.
